A Technical Discussion on Establishing a Legislative Framework for Chemical Management in Armenia Was Held at the American University of Armenia

A technical discussion on establishing a legislative framework for chemicals management in Armenia was held at the American University of Armenia. The event was organized by the AUA Acopian Center for the Environment and the Stockholm Environment Institute within the framework of the Green Agenda project.
Ara Mkrtchyan, Deputy Minister of Environment of the RA, attended the discussion and, in his welcoming remarks, emphasized the need for unified and systematic approaches in the sector, highlighting the importance of developing new legislation.
Representatives of relevant state bodies, inspection authorities, expert organizations, and research institutions were also present.
The purpose of the discussion was to clarify the necessary assessment framework for establishing Armenia’s chemicals management system, as well as to outline possible directions for harmonizing EU and EAEU legislation and addressing the commitments undertaken by the Republic of Armenia.
The participants presented their observations, touching upon a number of key areas:

  • Study of international best practices in the field of chemicals management
  • Assessment of existing legislative gaps and institutional roles
  • Discussion of realistic and applicable legislative models for Armenia
  • Definition of the framework and structure of the draft Law on Chemicals
  • Clarification of the next steps for developing a new regulatory system.

The partners also highlighted the importance of integrating Swedish experience in their remarks.
The results of the workshop discussions were summarized at the Ministry of Environment of the RA, where existing issues, future work, and possible solutions were outlined.
